The Malayalam Era is calculated from the founding of Kollam in the 9th century. The town’s later history is interwoven with the Portuguese, Dutch etc. Kollam was a revenue division of Travancore. In 1949, when the Travancore -Kochi State formed it becomes Kollam district.

Cherthala, Ambalapuzha, Karthkappally, Chengannore and Thiruvalla taluks parted on August 17,1957 when the Alapuzha district formed. In 1 st November 1982, when the Pathanamthitta district formed, Pathanamthitta Taluk and few villages of Kunnathur taluk also parted from Kollam district.

Cruising the picturesque Ashtamudi Lake on House boats has turned out to be a major tourist attraction in the country and even the U.S. Ambassdor, Robert Blackwill, had gone on record stating recently that he was "simply enthralled by the beauty of Astamudi Lake. This major tourist attraction is now going to be entrusted to the Private sector on lease. Travelling by boat along the backwaters is one of the highlights of a visit to Kerala. Kollam, the southern gateway to the backwaters of Kerala.
